Mental health problems in the workplace

People with mental health problems have two sets of concerns to address: their particular mental health needs and the added baggage that comes from the stigma and stereotyping that are commonly applied. The latter can, of course, significantly add to the pressures of the former and make them much worse. In the workplace this process can be highly problematic as it can mean that people who are highly valued employees who have a lot to contribute can face significant barriers as a result of prejudices. Mental health problems in the workplace can also be a source of anxiety and even panic – based on a lack of understanding and grossly distorted perceptions of mental health problems (fed by inaccurate media representations). All this adds up to a need to incorporate a well-informed understanding of mental health into our efforts to promote workplace well-being. To find out more, choose from the menu below.
