Neil Thompson’s Lessons for Living – Look for reasons, not causes

Neil Thompson’s Lessons for Living – Look for reasons, not causes

People commonly talk about what causes a particular behaviour or reaction. However, as it is people we are talking about, it makes more sense to talk about reasons, rather than causes. Human beings exist in a social context that is very powerful in its wide range of influences and we are, of course, subject to certain biological forces and constraints. But none of this removes human ‘agency’, to use the technical term, the ability to make choices. If we are looking for causes not reasons, we can be neglecting some key aspects of how a situation arose or how it is likely to unfold. For example, if I chose to make a complaint about a person or organization treating me…

Time off: Redesigning leave policies to support longer, healthier working lives

Time off: Redesigning leave policies to support longer, healthier working lives

People in the UK are living and working longer than ever before. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath have exposed serious physical and mental health issues facing our workforce. Declining population health is a long-term trend that is forecast to get worse in coming years. Over the last century, rights and access to time off work have steadily increased. However, our ageing workforce today has more complex health needs and evolving responsibilities outside of paid work. Currently, 2.83 million people are economically inactive due to long-term health issues, and the Health Foundation predicts a significant rise in working-age adults with major illnesses by 2040. Meanwhile, the International Longevity Centre has warned that the retirement age may rise to 71…

Warm spaces return to UK libraries for third year running

Warm spaces return to UK libraries for third year running

Public libraries are once again preparing to provide warmth, company and support to those affected by poverty and social isolation over the winter months. Warm spaces – sometimes called warm hubs or warm banks – are free community venues where people can go to stay warm during the colder months. The movement began in 2022 when energy prices soared because of the war in Ukraine. Click here to read more

Neil Thompson’s Lessons for Living – I-Thou, not I-it

Neil Thompson’s Lessons for Living – I-Thou, not I-it

This distinction comes from the work of Buber, a theologian. I-Thou refers to interactions that are premised on dignity and mutual respect. These can be enriching and humanizing for both parties. I-it interactions, by contrast, are purely instrumental, purely about getting the job done with the minimum of human connection – not necessarily rude or discourteous, but with no warmth or feeling. These interactions can be dehumanizing not only for the person on the receiving end of such an approach, but also the person who initiates this type of interaction. Some people rely on I-it interactions because they have no motivation to rise above simply getting the job done. However, even people who are committed to I-Thou interactions and the…

A spotlight on workplace mental health

A spotlight on workplace mental health

From four-day work week trials to upticks in investment in employee wellbeing, organisations are more aware than ever of the importance of mentally healthy workplaces. However, despite more organisations prioritising their employees' wellbeing, mental health is still one of the leading causes of people needing to take time off work for health reasons. According to The Health Foundation, mental ill health is now the most common cause of work-limiting conditions for people under 44-years-old, and the number of young people citing their mental health as a work-limiting factor has quadrupled in a decade.
